Picked these myself!

What did you do with your summer? I hope you had adventures that inspired and refreshed you for fall and winter. As for myself, I spent the entire summer dragging myself from one doctor’s appointment to another.

Now that my health is on the upswing, it’s time to bust out of the mundane to find the adventure I missed during the summer of 2023.

No, I’m not planning to sail a boat across the Atlantic, or take up flying, or go bungee-jumping. As exciting as those adventures sound, my idea for adventure is to capture the spirit of exploration with Wednesday day-trips.

My first Wednesday trip brought me to Webb Memorial State Park in Weymouth. Why? Because I love the ocean and have never experienced it from a Weymouth viewpoint.

That Wednesday dawned crisp and sunny. I kissed David goodbye, then ordered my Honda Fit GPS to perform its navigational magic. Along the way, I stopped at Wahlburgers at Hingham shipyard to order a picnic lunch. Then, enveloped in the invigorating scent of salt air, I drove along the shoreline to the park and found the last parking spot.

I chose a picnic table, polished off cheeseburger and fries, and watched moms push strollers, pet owners strain to keep up with their eager dogs, and joggers converse with mysterious callers. Then it was time for me to explore.

Set on a grassy peninsula overlooking Boston Harbor on one side and with Upper Neck Cover on the other, a walking trail follows an easy one-mile loop around the park. I ambled along the trail, collecting a seashell and a wildflower as souvenirs. And that was it for my first adventure one Wednesday.

The second adventure brought me closer to home. A trip to the Lexington Community Farm for PYO flower collecting. Again, the day was deliciously sunny, and there were lots of parents and kids enjoying the day and a cheerful golden retriever overseeing the farm store. Photo above the result of my flower gathering, the photo below shows the Lex Farm flower garden:

What’s next? Outdoorsy ideas include Echo Bridge in Newton (I’ll bring my harmonica), the North American Wolf Association in Ipswich, or hiking Walden Pond while listening to Thoreau’s classic.

Inclement day ideas include the Cat Café in Peabody, the Dr. Suess Museum in Springfield, MA., or Charlestown Tea and Treats. So many opportunities for adventure close to home.

I’d love to hear how you bring adventure into your life!
