Dream Walker Lily Scott Spouts Off!

NG: This month we talk with Lily Scott, the dream-walking detective featured in my first novel, Dream Stalker.

NG: So. Lily, tell us about your newest dream-walking adventure.

LS: No way am I doing you any favors! It’s time for the truth. You continue to fill my nights and days with monsters, murders, and mayhem. Darn if you don’t take inordinate pleasure in messing up my life from the comfort of your quiet little desk, your peaceful bed, and your dull-as-dirt dreams.

NG: Um, but….

LS: When you first brought me to life, it was perfection. I had a loving defense lawyer husband, Sam, who did all the fighting for justice in our family, a smart, beautiful daughter, Sarah, who would never know the dangers of dream-walking, and a gorgeous Federal-era home on Chestnut Street, one of the most beautiful streets in Salem, in Massachusetts, in the United States, in the world.

NG: You still….

LS: And then you ruined everything. Slowly, brick by brick, you tore down my comfortable life, turning me into a distraught widow with a daughter accused of murder. As if that wasn’t bad enough, you threw in an old friend’s suicide, a stalker haunting my dreams, and a killer abducting me during Halloween season in Salem.

NG: In my defense….

LS: Quiet! It gets worse. In book 2, you continue to pile on my troubles with new villains, new monsters and new love interests who may or may not fill Sam’s big shoes.

NG: Give me a break!

LS: Like the break you gave me! No way. Or, the new, troubled member of my extended family that you put in grave danger from a sly killer.

NG: Paranormal mysteries require monsters, murder and mayhem.

LG: Shush! If that isn’t bad enough, you mess with my Shadow Land challenges, doubling down with a powerful new dream-walking opponent bent on my destruction.

NG: I don’t know what you want from me. You’re a fictional character.

LS: I want to star in a movie like ambitious reporter Lois Lane, or wise and witty Miss Marple, or precocious detective Enola Holmes, all brought to life by their author? Meryl Streep’s portrayal of me would make my name a household word.

NG: That’s not fair.

LS: Or, at the very least, why can’t I be the living, breathing writer sitting in the cushy, rolling office chair, thinking up endless new punishments for my characters like some sadistic Marine sergeant barking out commands to innocent recruits—dig a five-foot hole, refill that hole, dig it again!

NG: Are you done?

LS: No!

NG: Well. I am. Done and speechless.

NG: But for my kind readers, below is a fun YouTube video with a funny take on fictional characters!

  1. My favorite line from the above:

“NG: I don’t know what you want from me. You’re a fictional character.”

I hope I get a chance to have such a conversation with the voices in my head someday!

    • Thanks, Kiri. As long as that voice isn’t as obstreperous as Lily, I’m sure the conversation would be golden!

  2. It’s odd. I cannot see the ‘Interview.’ I see there is a subject line for an interview, but there isn’t any attached interview here. Did it become disconnected from the page?

  3. What fun, Nancy! This is a delight. I love what you’ve done this month!
